Our final Grandview Cooking Club has arrived. Since October, staff here at the Allentown Learning and Engagement Center have been cooking up some tasty dishes the last Friday of every month. We've made zucchini pasta salad, hummus, pesto with pasta, spinach quesadillas, and fruit smoothies. Students asked for something sweet for the last food lesson, so we decided to make a yummy, refreshing fruit salad!
We used watermelon, apricots, peaches, mangos, and apples. Students were happy to see a colorful bowl of fruit waiting for them!
Before we began, Ms. Maggie discussed our different fruits and how the process would take place. We got into three groups to demonstrate how the different fruits would be prepared. Students picked the group with their favorite fruit, or one they've never tried before. Ms. Anna's group cut apples, apricots, and peaches; Ms. Maggie's group cut mangos; and Ms. Alyce's group cut watermelon!
Students in Grandview cooking club enjoy practicing their skills! It's important for them to build on knife and health safety to be better chefs at home. It's key that students learn the difference between straight-blade knives versus serrated knives in order to better prepare food. They did a fantastic job prepping.
We had loads of fun in our groups! Ms. Anna's group explored peach pits, apricot pits, and apple seeds to discover their varying shapes. Ms. Maggie's group learned that the skin of a mango is toxic! While cutting watermelon, Ms. Alyce's group discovered serrated knives are better suited for fruits with a thick skin and that not all parts of a fruit are edible.
After cutting all our fruits, we combined them into one big bowl. Now for the best part; eating!
Overall, most students enjoyed watermelon and apples the most. Some have never tried an apricot prior to our lesson; we love seeing kids try new foods! We hope they will continue to broaden their food horizon to try new and nutritious foods in the future.
