Foil Relief Art, Part 2

At New Artists, the third grade class recently finished up their foil relief art projects that they started a few weeks earlier. At the beginning of the lesson, each student had their own design drawn onto black board in glue. I walked the students through four more steps to finish the project.

  • First, they glued a piece of foil onto their boards using a glue stick and making sure to get all around and in between their designs.
  • Next, they used a cotton ball to smooth down the foil until their designs popped out.
  • Third, they took a dull pencil and added some finer details to their designs.
  • The final step was the most fun for most of the kids (and the messiest for me)! In this step they covered their projects in black acrylic paint that had been watered down slightly, and then wiped off the excess with a paper towel.
Black shoe polish is often used during the final step, but black acrylic paint makes a great substitute. Keep in mind that black acrylic paint is very thick and smelly, so make sure to ventilate the room properly and water down the paint to get the right consistency.

This project worked great with the third graders! Check out some of their finished masterpieces:
