National Compliment Day!

Hello, lovely readers. Did you know that this past Tuesday, January 24th was National Compliment Day? We at ALEC wanted to take the opportunity to engage our youth in the message behind this heartwarming holiday.

The words one uses in their day to day life can have powerful implications. We wanted to implore of our youth, what message do you send out into the world? When you choose your words, is your intent kindness?

We began by watching a video by Kid President, titled, "How Good Spreads".

Next, we hung up a compliment "word bank" in front of the class for all to draw inspiration from.

We then handed out small printable cards, asking students to complete a minimum of three kind messages each. Kids quickly got excited about the messages and most needed extra cards to give to their friends (and to take home to family members)!

Finally, we closed out this lesson by asking them what they felt they had gained by such gestures, and how receiving compliments made them feel inside. We had a great dialogue about how giving and kindness is rewarding in and of itself before we ended this fantastic day.

In closing, we hope this message radiates out into the world. Every act of kindness counts!  What can YOU do to make the world a better place?

In solidarity,
Alyce & Anna
