For our most recent community day we looked back on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy and the change he wanted to bring to our country. After some careful thought and discussion, we decided that just telling the kids about him wasn't going to be engaging. So we decided to show them these two videos by the YouTube user SoulPancake.
In the first video, Kid President tells us about Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and what he did. He encourages us to take a lesson from what Dr. King believed - that we can make change.
In the second video, Kid President asks us to consider our dreams and how powerful they can be if we pursue them. Dr. King dreamed of a better world, and he fought for that dream.
Our discussion with the kids centered on what they want to do, and what dreams they have. We challenged them to dream big, to dream hard, and to believe in their dream. In the wise words of Dr. King, "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools."
From all of the kids at ALEC, please, keep dreaming.
