“Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.” – Emily Brontë
Fall is here! As we welcome in the season of change, families around Pittsburgh may be
wondering how to enjoy it to the fullest without spending a fortune or traveling outside the city limits. Happily, the community has delivered
an abundance of local, budget-friendly activities. Explore what the
city has to offer with these 5 family adventures under $5. For other fun fall favorites, check out these 4 activities from PittsburghMom.
Thanks to the Allegheny Regional Asset District, from
September 24 through November 9, RADical Days 2014
will offer happenings around the city free of charge. Perfect for family adventures! From festivals to free admission days, you have to
check it out. Here are a few to get you started.
Fall means pumpkins! Brightwood
Pumpkinfest is an annual free festival that provides a fun-filled day for
kids and their families over on the North Side. Your child will leave this
event with a fall pumpkin and a bag of goodies. Create crafts, pet animals, ride a train,
and play games on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 1pm-4pm.
Does your child love learning about the night sky? SkyWatch
is a program at the Carnegie Science Center that gives you the chance to cozy
up under the stars. This event is held every Friday & Saturday through
November 1st, as long as the skies are clear, at the Henry Buhl, Jr.
Observatory. The cost is only $2 per person or free with the purchase of a laser
show or Omnimax ticket.
If you grew up in
Pittsburgh, chances are you have taken a ride down Mount Washington on the Duquesne Incline. With the seasons changing and the tree’s transforming to beautiful
warm colors, this is the perfect time of year to either make a trip down memory
lane or create a new memory with family. The fares for this adventure are $2.50
each way or $5.00 round trip for adults (ages 12-64), $1.25 each way or $2.50
round trip for children (ages 6-11), and free for children 5 and under. The
incline is open 365 days of the year.
Over at 5050 Liberty Avenue, 15224, in the neighborhood center
of Bloomfield is the Bloomfield Saturday Market. The market is held every Saturday through November 1st,
rain or shine. They offer locally harvested produce, meat, treats, and prepared
meals. Grab a coffee or try some yoga while the kids participate in cooking
demonstrations, activities, and health screenings. It’s a great time for
families and is free to experience. And don’t miss this year’s Harvest Festival
on November 1. There will be a hay maze, crafting, and free mini pumpkins for
the kids!
