The Allentown Learning and Engagement Center (ALEC) is a collaborative effort of the Brashear Association and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. ALEC is located at the former Carnegie Library Pop Up in Allentown at 1206 Arlington Ave. The Pop Up was an 18 month project for the library. As the library neared the end of the project, we agreed to create a partnership to maintain the location as a community asset. ALEC is open Monday-Thursday from 12-6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 12-5 p.m. To read more about the transition, check out this article in the South Pittsburgh Reporter.
So far, we have hosted Burgh Bees, recorded student interviews through the Hear Me project and cleaned up the planters outside of ALEC.
We are planning our four week summer camp, the Allentown Summer Academy, that will begin June 16, 2014. Of course, this space gives us a great opportunity to connect with our many partners including Pittsburgh Grandview K-5, the neighborhood school in Allentown that has graciously hosted our after school program for many years.
Come visit us on Saturday, May 17 for our Open House from 2-4 p.m. and check out many of our free programs including:
- After school programs
- Summer programs for children
- Nutrition, health and wellness information
- Job and career programs
- Literacy programs
- Family education
- Computers and Internet access
- Information and assistance
