In my 4th and 5th grade class at New Artists we've been doing a lot of work with drawing, especially facial shapes and symmetry. Because I wanted to do a self portrait with the kids at some point this year, it seemed to be the perfect time. I turned it into a two week project where the students spent the first week planning and sketching the outline of their self portraits, and the second they were allowed to use any medium they wanted (marker, paint, colored pencil, pastel) to complete their pieces. It's always fun to see what they come up with when given a more open ended assignment. Check out a few of their finished works of art below!
