Introducing Mindfulness

As we kick off our Winter/Spring semester at ALEC, we are starting a theme of Mindfulness and introducing our students to the benefits of such a practice. Because we work with elementary age youth (grades 2-5), they are usually swimming the waters of processing their emotions, learning to cope and be aware of their actions. It is a common goal at ALEC to not just tutor our youth with their school work, but to introduce them to lessons that might not always fit the curriculum of our schools. A few activities we will be focusing on are meditation, mantras, creating handheld reminders (such as stress balls, thought jars and other crafts) to remind our youth of their progress and journey.

Here are a few exmaples of the personal mantras our students created:

We believe that if our students are introduced to the concept of mindfulness at a young age, they will have a greater emotional landscape and set of tools to help them as they mature. While most of these courses will be taught during the regular M-TH semester days, we will also be extending some of these to the youth around the neighborhood who may want to visit us during our drop in hours on Saturdays. Our drop is schedule is every Saturday from 12-3 pm at our Allentown Learning Engagement Center.

We hope to see you sometime!
