Respect & Accept!

Respect: noun | A feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way.

At the Allentown Learning and Engagement Center, we stress the core value of respect to create a safe and fun learning environment.  As part of our community lesson Wednesdays, staff here at ALEC have decided to learn about the idea of respect and how we can display it in both the classroom and our every day lives.

Groups worked together to write ways we can show respect in a positive way.  For example, rather than stating "Don't talk while others are speaking", say "Listen while others are speaking".  In the classroom, we believe it is imperative to frame rules positively!

Below: the start of our "respect" poster.

Below: Damari, David and Cayden collaborating on how to positively frame rules of respect.

Here is the finished poster!

At the end of our lesson, we decided to put respect to the test via the popular mannequin challenge! The kids were excited to act out a scene depicting respect with one another.  Check out the videos below from our YouTube channel, The Brashear Association.

The first video shows our friends intently listening to Jeffrey, one of our 5th grade students here at ALEC.

The second video shows our friends working together and spreading kindness.

Brashear Kids enjoyed learning about positivity and respect; especially through the mannequin challenge!  It was great to see the students working together for a common goal.
