Engineers? Why Not!

Our science day on November 10th saw the kids explore engineering with two different activities.  The lessons required the kids to problem solve and think creatively about how to accomplish their objective.

Our awesome friends from Hilltop YMCA stopped by again to introduce the Engineering Design Process to the 4th and 5th graders.

The group was tasked with building a structure higher than 10 inches using only index cards and tape.  The structure had to support a stuffed dog toy for at least 10 seconds.  Every single group built a structure strong enough to support the dog!

Meanwhile, Ms. Sarah's class was able to make use of the wonders of modern craft engineering to create (click here for more) cars using straws, paper, cardboard, and balloons.  By blowing into the straws that led into the balloon, the kids were able to make the car propel itself when that air escaped the balloon.

While the kids encountered a few obstacles along the way in both activities, they all ended the day having participated in making something that they could be proud of!
