No Party Like a Tech Party

On Thursday, July 23rd, ALEC had the opportunity to host a Tech Party!  This summer, we've had some AmeriCorps members come and help us from the Hilltop YMCA.  At the Hilltop YMCA they focus on technology based activities with the youth.

Our helpers from the YMCA led tech camp earlier this summer. It was quite a success!

We invited the kids that attend our camps, their families, and members of the community to stop by.  This was an opportunity for the kids to show off some of the things they learned during Tech Camp.

The other AmeriCorps members at the Hilltop YMCA came to help and had some new activities for the kids to try such as the Makey-Makey and Hummingbird kits.

We had a station for Little Bits, a kit that teaches kids about how circuits are created with LED lights, sensors, and motors. Bristle bots was also quite a hit. Bristle Bots are made with the head of a toothbrush, a vibrating motor, a battery, and googly eyes for the finishing touch.

You can find out more about them here: http://www.bristlebots.org/. Outside, we had t-shirts and bandanna that the kids could paint with a Brashear Kids logo stencil and spray fabric paint.

It was a great opportunity for our kids to show off what they have been learning this summer. It was also a great opportunity to show off our new space and get to meet some new people from the community!
