End of the Year Art show: New Artists

On Cinco de Mayo, we held the culminating event of our New Artists program, the end of the year Art show! It was held at the Southside branch of the Carnegie Public Library. The show included the best work of our students, as well as snacks, a photobooth and all around fun!

Each student had a section of the wall that included drawings, paintings, collages and sculptures. I love seeing our young artists' work gathered in groups, because you can see which colors, patterns and themes each artist likes to work with. Accompanying the work was Artist statements, which included a small self-portrait, and statements about their favorite media, what inspires them, and what artistic career would most appeal to them.

We also had a photo booth backdrop of a cactus scene, tissue paper flowers, and fiesta banners. Straw hats, sombreros, a serape, and plenty of mustaches were on a cart of accessories. The photo booth was a popular feature of our show. You can see more photos of kids and their families on our Facebook page.

We had a great spread of snacks at our show, generously brought by students and their parents. Most notably, we had blue corn and green guacamole chips, as well as the most amazing salsa. There was also cute sombrero cookies, gluten-free chocolate chip cookies, marshmallow eggs, and cheddar popcorn, just to name a few snacks. Everyone also loved gathering around the punch bowl. The punch was made with pineapple juice, lemon-lime soda, pink lemonade, and fresh cut limes, lemons and frozen strawberries. We had to refill the punch bowl several times--everyone could not get enough!

Our show was bright and colorful, and the atmosphere fun and party-like. At one point, our students even spontaneously formed into a conga line! One of our parents also led us in a lovely group song.

Thanks to all of our students, parents, teachers, families and friends that came to the show! We had a wonderful time showcasing the talents of our New Artists.
