A Pirates Life for Me

In honor of talk like a pirate day (it's a real day - September 19th), we did a pirate themed art lesson for our New Artists class.

Here's what you will need:

Tutorial for making weathered and aged paper is here
In Miss Laura's class we did wanted posters instructing the students to use themselves in the wanted poster.

First Laura taught them how to draw their face with a few basic techniques for showing some facial symmetry We used pencil for this phase. For more tips go check out Julie's blog, Jujubeeillustrations.

Then we enhanced it by adding charcoal to shade in or darken specific areas of their picture.
They turned out great and all of students really seemed to enjoy this aspect of self portraits because it gave them a fun element to add to their personality, their inner pirate!

Miss Emily's class did a very similar project/theme. They made treasure maps! They let their imaginations run wild, creating fantastic maps of magical places to go to.

They started off with a pencil sketch of their map and then enhanced with various coloring utensils. It was great to see what they came up with!

Don't forget about Pittsburgh's day of giving!
