Special Guest: Kids Cook

Over the past couple months of afterschool programming at Grandview Elementary we've been able to participate in this really great program through the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank called Kids Cook. Kids Cook comes to afterschool programs in the Pittsburgh area to do a series of cooking lessons teaching kids how to cook simple meals and snacks while also promoting healthy eating. Both of our classes of younger and older students were able to have 3 lessons each making a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, honey mustard chicken salad sandwiches, and finally smoothie day (this was a big hit!). Check out a couple pictures of our future master chefs below, along with the recipe of the smoothies we made!

Fruit Smoothie Recipe:
Ingredients:
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 cup frozen strawberries/blueberries
1 small container of vanilla yogurt (about 1 cup)
fresh spinach (optional, and sounds weird but you can't taste it and it's super healthy!)

Cooking Tools:
Blender
Drinking Glass
Measuring Cups
Spoon

Steps:
1) Wash your hands.
2) Empty the container of yogurt into the blender.
3) Add 1/4 cup of orange juice and 1/2 cup frozen berries into the blender.
4) Add a few leaves of spinach.
5) Put the lid on the blender securely and press the power button. Hold your hand on tip of the lid and let the blender run until the mixture looks smooth.
6) Pour your smoothie in your cup and you're done!
