Experimenting With Pastels

Last Thursday at New Artists I had my 4th and 5th graders working with pastels and markers to experiment with different mediums and textures. The assignment was to draw something with the markers first, and then color over it with the pastels. After that I passed out popsicle sticks so they could scratch designs into the pastel to try making different textures. It was pretty open ended so we got a lot of creative designs. Inspiration for this idea came from this awesome blog: Art Projects for Kids.

For the younger kids, Maggie decided to give them a little bit more structure by having them replicate Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky's circle paintings.

Both projects worked out really well, and the older kids liked experimenting with textures and mixing mediums. I would highly recommend this project for kids who are really art driven!
