Cubism with Picasso

Last semester we built up a great knowledge of the art elements and principles. It was fun seeing how everyone was able to use them in their own way. All the kids have such unique styles I can recognize their work before I even read the name. This semester we are shifting focus to art styles. Throughout the rest of the year we will use many different mediums and styles of art. Our first study was on cubism. We looked at the works of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the creators of the style. The kids worked to recreate the style using oil pastels.

We tried to recreate the modern abstract look using geometry and including multiple perspectives. It was great seeing the kids reach beyond reality for their art. There were a lot of bold colors and shapes.

The kids really enjoyed Picasso's classic multiple perspective face from "Girl Before a Mirror" and many put their own spin on it.

The semester is off to a great start and I can't wait to see the work these kids come up with!
